About 6 October City

Work on establishing 6 October City began under Presidential Decree No. 504 of 1979 during the era of late President Anwar Sadat, with its name commemorating the victory of the October War of 1973. The goal of its establishment was to ease the population density of Greater Cairo and provide a new urban extension on the Western Desert, as part of the first-generation cities system launched by the Egyptian state in the early 1980s.

 

The New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) oversees the city through the 6 October City Development Agency, which supervises district planning, land distribution, and utility monitoring. Administratively, the city falls under Giza Governorate, after being an independent governorate between 2008 and 2011 before reverting back to Giza by presidential decree.

 

The complete city system consists of 3 main areas: the mother city covering 52,000 feddans, October Gardens covering 27,000 feddans, and New 6 October City covering 78,500 feddans (established by Presidential Decree No. 109 of 2017), placing 6 October among the largest urban cities in Egypt by area.

 

The city sits about 170 meters above sea level, which gives it a dry and moderate desert climate compared to the heart of Cairo. Its master plan features wide, well-organized streets and a clear layout centered around Al-Hosary Square, the geographic and service hub of the city, with the 12 numbered residential districts distributed in two opposing rows around the square, six districts per row.
